Some friends and I caught the last 10 minutes of Monday night's season premiere of "Jon & Kate Plus Eight." These friends, a married couple with kids, have polar-opposite reactions to Jon and Kate Gosselin, who in those last few minutes were interviewed together on a love seat but couldn't have looked more uncomfortable.

My guy friend thinks Kate is a supreme b*tch and an attention wh*re. He thinks she's in this for the celebrity it brings her. When she started crying Monday night, he thought she was acting.

My female friend is far more sympathetic toward Kate and mentioned that Jon has (allegedly) had an affair. She hadn't heard that Kate is (allegedly) doing the same. (I don't know how a couple with eight children would have time to even contemplate screwing around, but who knows.)

Jon quit his job two years ago. Kate had been a stay-at-home mom but these days spends some of her time on the road doing public appearances.

My female friend thinks the Gosselins are providing for their family by doing the TLC show. One assumes it would pay decent money (she'd heard $75K an episode, but I don't know if that's true).

My guy friend thinks the Gosselins are sacrificing their children's privacy for the sake of money and celebrity. And clearly, he says, Jon isn't into it like Kate is.

So what do YOU think? Do you feel sorry for anyone? Leave a comment. Let's get a discussion going.

NAHANT - Under a cloudless, pale blue sky, hundreds of residents in this scenic seaside town lined its main thoroughfare for the annual Memorial Day parade, featuring the farewell appearance of a World War I machine gun that was part of the town's victory parade for returning soldiers in 1919.

The gun, which war hero Alvin York seized from the Germans in a legendary raid behind enemy lines, was brought to Nahant by a local Army clerk who had snatched it as a souvenir. The gun had vanished from public view for years until it was discovered in the attic of the town library six years ago.

The library is sending the historic Maxim gun, believed to be one of the last remaining from York's famous 1918 incursion, to a museum in Tennessee, York's home state. The library will receive a $10,000 donation.

The gun was towed in a bunting-draped red wagon by three Boy Scouts, re-creating the scene from the 1919 parade.

"This is its farewell tour," said library trustee John Welsh. "A victory lap."

Nahant, a narrow, rocky peninsula that juts into Massachusetts Bay, is the state's smallest town by area. But at a time when many other communities are scaling back Memorial Day parades, Nahant's remains strikingly vibrant, a heartfelt tradition that draws virtually all of the town's 3,600 residents to the main thoroughfare.

"Half the town marches, and the other half watches," quipped Elizabeth Welsh, John Welsh's 25-year-old daughter as she watched from the roadside.

The parade rolled through the flag-lined center of town, passing cottages and Colonials with picket fences and wraparound porches, to Greenlawn Cemetery, where flags and fresh flowers graced the graves of veteran. Lining the street, the crowd applauded warmly as veterans passed by, often calling out to them by name.

Afterward, many said they were touched by the town's appreciation.

"It means a lot," said Phil Joyce, a Korean War veteran. "It really does."

His wife, Gertrud, grew up in Germany during World War II and remembers American soldiers distributing food to her and other hungry children. Every day, she thanks them for what they did, and grieves for what they gave up. Never more so, the 74-year-old said, than on Memorial Day.

"I am ever so grateful, and always will be," she said, her voice quivering with emotion. "All these people had to sacrifice so much."

At a memorial service at the cemetery, Vietnam War veteran Tom Gallery lauded military veterans as "the finest, greatest testimony on behalf of the finest, greatest country the world has ever known." He urged the crowd that ringed the brick-walled graveyard to thank veterans for their service. A simple show of appreciation, he said, would mean more than any medal.

Adding to the day's spectacle was the mounted machine gun's final hurrah in Nahant, its home for 90 years after it was captured by York and his men in an odds-defying raid of a heavily fortified German machine gun nest in the Argonne Forest. York was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions, which resulted in the capture of 132 German soldiers and 35 machine guns.

One of those guns was later given to the town in 1918 by Nahant native Mayland Lewis.

After discovering the gun a few years ago, town officials considered selling it to a collector, but were stymied by a law that forbids the sale of unregistered guns, and another that prohibits new registrations on automatic weapons.

Since it was illegal for the library to have the gun at all, it was locked away in the evidence room of the police station, while officials searched for a suitable home. Eventually, they found one - the Museum of Appalachia in Clinton, Tenn. The museum's donation will support a fund for a library addition.

Near the end of the memorial service, sixth-grader Kristian Hosker read Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg address from the top of the cemetery. His voice strong, he recited the speech from memory, without a single mistake. The crowd roared its approval, and Hosker smiled. When the ceremony ended, he ran into his mother's outstretched arms.

PARIS - Jewelry and other items worth around 80,000 euros ($112,000) were stolen from Italian actress Monica Bellucci's Paris apartment on Sunday while she was at the Cannes Film Festival's closing ceremony, police said.

Bellucci, a former model who is married to French cinema star Vincent Cassel and has appeared in "The Matrix Reloaded" and "Irreversible," had not yet officially reported the theft, a police spokesman said.

A final valuation of the items stolen from the couple's apartment, which also included laptop computers and Bellucci's Italian passport, was therefore not available.

Bellucci was at Cannes, a resort town on France's Mediterranean coast, to promote Marina de Van's "Don't Turn Around," in which she stars alongside French actress and former Bond girl Sophie Marceau.

An unknown number of burglars entered the apartment, on the fourth floor of a building in eastern Paris, from a terrace, the spokesman said.

LOS ANGELES - Actor Mel Gibson, who is going through a divorce from his wife of 28 years, said on Monday his Russian girlfriend is expecting their baby.

"This is true," Gibson said during an appearance on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" after the host asked him to confirm speculation that musician Oksana Grigorieva was pregnant.

Gibson, 53, who already has seven children, gave away few details, replying jokingly, "A human being, I think," when Leno asked about the baby's gender.

Celebrity gossip websites said the baby was due in the autumn.

Gibson appeared to rule out any marriage plans, saying, "Who would do it twice?"

Gibson's wife, Robyn, filed for divorce last month, citing irreconcilable differences with the "Lethal Weapon" star.

Gibson, dressed in blue jeans, blue blazer and white dress shirt, appeared philosophical about the divorce, saying, "I did a pretty good hatchet job on my marriage."

He said he and his wife split up three years ago, shortly after he was arrested in Malibu for drunken driving and launched into an alcohol-fueled tirade against Jews.

He apologized and sought treatment for alcoholism.

Gibson told Leno he met Grigorieva, 39, in 2008 after the singer/pianist had been signed to his Icon Records label. They appeared in public together a month ago at a Los Angeles industry screening of "X-Men Wolverine: Origins."

Gibson was raised in Australia and was one of the highest- paid and most popular actors in the world in the 1990s, winning best-director and best-picture Oscars for his 1995 movie "Braveheart."

Exodus Tyson was playing near some exercise equipment when she accidentally got tangled in a cord or rope hanging from a treadmill, the Arizona Republic reported on its website.

The Phoenix Police Department did not immediately return phone calls.

ABC News reported that the child was rushed to St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in central Phoenix, where she was listed in critical condition on life support.

Police said that based on the initial investigation, the incident appeared to be "a tragic accident," ABC reported.

Tyson is the subject of a new documentary by director James Toback. He was not in Phoenix at the time of the accident, but was shown later on television news arriving at the hospital.
