Weeds Season 5 Episode 1 Synopsis:

(Beginning moments after last season’s finale…) Cesar isn’t happy his boss Esteban is backing off the whole Nancy-must-die-for-her-betrayal plan. The sonogram of his young son has apparently changed the mind of the Mexican mayor/drug runner. Cesar decides no one can know they’re letting her off — he shoots the two witnesses in the room. Esteban tells Cesar to drive a freaked out Nancy home. Thinking this means “go shoot her in the desert” she volunteers to drive herself. He lets her go.

Dean and Isabelle play cards. He gets a call from his daughter Quinn’s boyfriend, demanding ransom for Celia. But he’s broke and she’s his ex, so he tells him to do what he needs to do. Quinn, not happy, gives her boyfriend a knee to the crotch. Nice family. Nancy waits in the mall. She sees a spot of blood on her purse. At the house, Silas lays out his land-buying plan to Andy and Doug. Doug shows off his rope burns from auto-erotic asphyxiation. Shane comes in with a haircut and an ear ring. They debate what to do with Nancy’s room if she doesn’t come back. She does. In bed the next day, Nancy gets the ransom call for Celia. She explains they’re really not friends and hangs up. Andy comes in with a plan. He thinks they should flee. “It’s the Mexican mafia, there’s no where to go,” she says. He suggests Copenhagen. And, he adds, “I love you.” She responds by telling him she’s pregnant. Andy leaves. Cesar calls, telling Nancy to be at an address at 2 p.m. Shane and his groupies hang out in the library, where he sells weed. His English teacher comes by to cop. He has 22 papers to grade that night and they’re all on Anne Frank. Sanjay talks to Agent Roy Till. Till gets a call from Mexico. It’s someone calling demanding ransom for Celia. Silas looks into Doug’s growing-in-a national park plan. Doug gets the Celia ransom call. He hangs up. Andy sulks over Nancy. Doug wants in on the plan. Andy’s phone rings. Yes, he knows Celia. “So what, people die, every day?” Then he starts babbling about people dying and having babies, including women in their 40s. Silas asks who’s having a baby. In captivity, Celia can’t believe no one will pay her ransom. She talks to Rudolfo, telling him he doesn’t have to put up with his daughter hurting him. Quinn interrupts as he’s saying it’s his fault for making her mad. She says if no one will pay they’ll kill her mom and sell her organs. She orders Rudolfo to go have sex with her. Kidnapper foreplay. Nancy waits in a OB-GYN’s exam room. Esteban comes in with Cesar, speaking to the doctor in Spanish about what tests they can run on the baby. Nancy asks what’s going on. Esteban gives her some forms to sign. She resists and he asks everyone to leave. She suggests they go to her doctor. Instead, he lays her down on the table and puts her feet in the stirrups, saying instead they’ll see his doctor. When he leaves Nancy seems to realize what she’s gotten herself into. She lies on the table and cries. Celia asks her daughter if maybe enough is enough. She offers to charge a week at the spa for the both of them. Quinn tells her mom what’s going to happen to her organs on the black market. She wants to be there when they cut out her mom’s heart just to make sure she has one. Celia whines about surviving cancer just to face this. Rudolfo points out they can’t sell Celia’s organs since she had radiation. Quinn attacks Celia, but Rudolfo fends her off and kicks her out. Shane comes in when Silas and Doug are prepping for their camping/pot growing adventure and asks why Andy is baking tons of banana bread. Doug blurts out that Nancy is pregnant. Which is news to her son Shane. Nancy comes home to the lovely smelling bread. “Well, I’ve been thinking,” Andy says, “Just because you’ve been a slutty irresponsible slutty slut and had unprotected sex with a Mexican gangster, that doesn’t mean we can’t be friends.” She asks Andy to take Shane up to her sister’s. Shane walks in, not believing the news. She confirms it. “And you’re how old?” is his response. Silas asks when the abortion is. She’s having the baby. Andy says it’s the key to keeping her Mexican boyfriend from killing them all. Then she tells Shane he’s going to live with his aunt in Oakland. He expresses the sentiment “forget that” using stronger language. Shane and Silas start fighting. Nancy picks up a loaf of banana bread to break it up, but burns her hand and drops the loaf on the floor. Andy shouts at her: “You ruin everything you touch!” A little while later, Silas ignores her as they leave to plant his clones in the forest. So do Shane and Andy as they leave for Oakland. Nancy is left alone. Later, she drinks a coffee at an outdoor mall. Loud music starts blaring and people start dancing. Someone tells Nancy its a flash mob, done “’cause it’s cool.” She cracks up as people of all ages and types start dancing. Then the music stops and they walk away. And Nancy sees Cesar watching her. Idle Hands is a 1999 comedy/horror movie starring Devon Sawa, Seth Green, and Jessica Alba with Elden Henson and Vivica A. Fox. Idle Hands follows the life of a teen whose hand becomes possessed and goes on a killing spree, even after being cut off from his arm.

Anton Tobias (Devon Sawa) is an average lazy stoner teenager. He has two caring parents (Fred Willard and Connie Ray) and two best friends, Pnub (Elden Henson) and Mick (Seth Green). He has a crush on Molly (Jessica Alba), the girl across the street.

Everything is going fine until a string of murders plagues the town. Then, when Anton's parents wind up dead on Halloween, all the clues point to Anton. Anton's hand stabs Mick's forehead with a bottle (killing him), and throws a circular saw blade at Pnub (beheading him).

He then realises that his right hand has become possessed (little known to him, the hand is searching for a soul to bring back to Hell). Anton's hand throws his cat across the street after fighting for the remote, and while searching for his cat, his hand forces him to ring Molly's doorbell and the two start a relationship. Anton holds a funeral (of sorts) for his parents and friends. However, Pnub and Mick decide not to go to heaven, claiming the entrance was "too far", and instead return to their former bodies, (although Mick has a bottle in his head and Pnub is still decapitated). With their help Anton must stop his possessed hand.

Meanwhile, a druidic high priestess named Debi LeCure (Vivica A. Fox) in Utah has found out that when the locations of killings that have happened all over the country are connected in the order they happened, it makes a pentagram.

After his hand kills two cops Anton knew from high school, Anton cuts it off with a cleaver and Mick cauterizes his wound with an iron. Pnub and Mick go to his place for a First-Aid Kit as Anton battles with his severed hand, eventually trapping it in a microwave and burning it. Meanwhile, Debi (now along with Randy (Jack Noseworthy), a local metalhead with a monster truck and a neighbor of Anton) hunts Anton down, as Debi knows how to put a stop to Anton's possessed hand. After sending Molly to the school dance, to what Anton thinks will be a safe place, Anton returns to his home to finish off the hand. Unfortunately Pnub and Mick opened the microwave to make some burritos and the hand had already escaped. Mick fixes Pnub's decapitated head with a meat fork and duct tape and they head to the dance with Anton to look for the hand.

The three steal Randy's Ford, accidentally hitting Debi while backing up, and knocking her unconscious. Randy uses "CPR" on her and revives her. Meanwhile, a couple making out in a car are killed, one's neck being broken, the other's head bashed in. Anton, Pnub, and Mick see this and split up. Mick and Pnub go to the school Halloween dance (everyone thinks their gory appearance is a costume) to watch over Molly, while Anton looks for the hand. The hand, meanwhile, kills the principal in his office while he indulges in a little phone sex. Randy and Debi meet up with Anton, and after attempting to kill him to "stop the evil", they realize he's cut off his hand, and it's loose somewhere in the building, Debi explains to Anton that the hand will drag Molly's soul into the netherworld with it at 12:00am Druid time, which is in 6 minutes. Pnub and Mick, meanwhile, are at the dance 'watching' over Molly. Anton tries to warn everyone about his hand, but is just booed at for stopping the show.

The Hand then kills the lead singer at the dance and causes a panic. Molly and her friend Tanya, however, escape through the vents. They end up at a giant fan, and Molly uses Tanya's shoe to stop the fan from moving. Molly climbs down using a rope, but Tanya is too afraid to go, so she stalls; and the hand comes and ties the rope around her neck, then shoves her down. Then the Hand removes Tanya's shoe, causing the rope to pull Tanya into the now moving fan. Molly runs into the art room, only to have a pot smashed on her head by the hand, causing her to faint.

Anton, now searching in the art room, fights with the Hand while it's inside a puppet; but as soon as he's about to finish it off, Mick and Pnub drop from the vents right on top of him, causing it to escape. They hear Molly scream, and find the Hand in an autoshop, with Molly strapped to a car being raised toward a pentagram on the ceiling. Anton, Mick & Pnub fight with the Hand over the controls to try stop the car, but the Hand has a good grip. Mick finds a mechanics "Mighty Joe Bong" and he and Pnub smoke a bowl "for strength" while Molly is raised toward the roof. Anton takes in some and blows his smoke into the Hand (which is still inside a hand-puppet) getting it stoned, where it drops the controls and they save Molly. Debi throws a ritual knife into the Hand (which lands in Mick's chest), stopping it in a puff of smoke and fire. She and Randy take off for "ritualistic sex." Anton releases Molly from the top of the car, they go under the car and start making out. Meanwhile, Mick realizes he never got a hit off of the mechanics 3-Chamber Bong, and tells Pnub to 'light me up'. In the process of lighting the Bong, Pnub accidentally hits the controls for the car, and Anton is crushed by the car when the controls lower it too fast.

The movie ends with Anton and Molly in the hospital. Anton has given up heaven to stay with Molly, and Mick and Pnub are now his Guardian Angels, sent to see that he doesn't return to his "evil ways". After Molly leaves, Mick and Pnub go to the SnackMaster in the hall, shutting off the lights as they leave the room. Anton looks at the ceiling to see "IM UNDER THE BED" written in glow-in-the-dark paint. As Anton screams for Mick and Pnub to "come and guard me", The two joke about how they wrote that and how Anton screams like a girl, and the credits roll.

Zak Bagans, ghost hunter, is given a tour of Preston Castle's infirmary, where paranormal activity runs rampant in the abandoned building.

New episodes of Ghost Adventures begin Tonight at 9PM on Travel Channel! Ghost Adventures will be cast at Preston Castle.

High atop a hill lies the former Preston School of Industry - a reform school - known locally as Preston Castle.

Preston Castle was built in the late 1890's. Thousands of homeless, incorrigible and violent state "wards" learned trades like farming, carpentry and auto repair until the 1960's. Merle Haggard and 50's cowboy star Rory Calhoun once lived at Preston Castle.

Nothing was visibly amiss. The bright blue skies with puffy clouds under which the lush green hills of Amador County made for the kind of a perfect bucolic photo visitors bureaus place on brochure covers.

Stepping out of the car my eyes scanned across dark elongated windows some boarded others caged above and below towers and turrets. Despite the temperature being in the 90's a chill, and not the refreshing kind.

Under a massive arch my guide, Marie Nutting, smiled and took my initial outburst of "wow, this place is really creepy" in stride. As board president of the Preston Castle Foundation, a band of intrepid volunteers committed to saving the structure, my comment was not new to her.

Entering the facility at Preston Castle nothing supernatural hit me. No flying plasma or disembodied voices. The two front rooms were rather bland in fact except for a large steel safe, topped with a man' head and a unique drinking fountain.

Then a second set of doors slowly opened, and the chill returned. Not with icy fingers dancing lightly but handfuls of thrusting fear.

Looking beyond the obvious decay, and pushing aside my trepidation, people riding the water driven elevator and reading books where once 7,000 of them stood in the library.

The old infirmary of Preston Castle that certain feeling once again returned. It was hard to describe, as it was nothing violent, but rather a feeling of unseen vitality.

In 2008, during her organization's first outing to the Preston Castle, orbs of light made a sweeping clockwise motion across the heads of researchers.

CHICAGO – Hugh Laurie deserves the heaps of praise that he gets for his spectacular work on “House,” but if you’re wondering what that show would be like without the same believable medical issues, interesting characters, or whip-smart dialogue provided by the show’s underrated writers, check out the new “Mental,” another series about a rebellious doctor that pales in comparison.

Dr. Jack Gallagher (Chris Vance) is the new unorthodox psychiatrist named Director of Mental Health Services at a Los Angeles hospital. He battles his conservative administrator named Nora Skoff (Annabella Sciorra), a woman with whom he happens to share a romantic past.

Solving each week’s medical mystery with Dr. Gallagher will be Dr. Veronica Hayden-Jones (Jacqueline McKenzie) and the combative Dr. Carl Belle (Derek Webster) on the administrative level and residents Dr. Arturo Suarez (Nicholas Gonzalez) and Dr. Chloe Artis (Marisa Ramirez) by the doctor’s side.

The new doctor first invites patients to sit in on staff meetings - “It’s really more their hospital than ours” - and then does card tricks. I’m sure it’s not the intention of the writers of “Mental,” but the show pushes the boundaries of the “maverick doctor” to the point that I kind of wanted him fired.

Whoever thought it was a good idea to visualize the hallucinations of the patients definitely needs to spend some time in a padded cell. Moments seen through the eyes of the patient include a man who sees lizard eyes on people, another who visualizes stabbing a pen in his jugular, and even the graphic visions of the elderly sex addict. All of them are embarrassing from a dramatic viewpoint and demeaning from a medical one.

The mental health tragedy in this country - most homeless people are mentally handicapped and people are misdiagnosed on a regular basis - seems like an interesting foundation for drama. The problem is that “Mental” reduces everything to a device. All the mentally ill need is a rambunctious new doctor!

As for what works about “Mental,” Chris Vance is certainly not bad. He actually does what he can to rein in the melodrama around him and doesn’t overplay his character’s maverick side, even if the script keeps pressing him to do so. Annabella Sciorra isn’t bad either but she can’t find the cure for the eye-rolling dialogue. (A woman actually says to the doctor coming to her home, “visiting hours are over, doctor” to get him to leave. I couldn’t make that kind of writing up.)

“Mental” is merely more proof that TV has always been and will always be about the writing. The generic “House”-esque structure of “Mental” is problematic enough, but with more interesting characters and believable medical drama, the show might have worked. That was not meant to be.

FOX is burning off “Mental” in the summer months for a reason. It doesn’t have a sweet post-“American Idol” premiere and has barely been promoted. There’s a reason for both of those things. It would be crazy to expect “Mental” to be anything but a memory by the time the fall schedule premieres.

“Mental” premieres on FOX on Tuesday, May 26th, 2009 at 8pm CST. It stars Chris Vance, Annabella Sciorra, House, Jacqueline McKenzie, Derek Webster, Nicholas Gonzalez, and Marisa Ramirez. It was created by Deborah Joy Levine and Dan Levine.
