A woman was struck and killed by a Capitol Corridor train Thursday afternoon in unincorporated Hayward, apparently when she was pulled into the path train by a dog she was walking.
The unknown woman, described as in her early to mid-30s, had been walking a pit bull terrier not far from the tracks about 2:15 p.m. on Blossom Way between Meekland and Times avenues.
As the train was approaching at the path, the crossing gates came down and the man apparently rode around the gates and made it across. But the dog wanted to cross as well.
She's trying to hold the dog, but can't control him, It pulled her right in front of the path train. It's very plausible that the dog wanted to follow its owner." said witness.
This is a terrible tragedy that didn't have to happen, people need to understand that it's easy to underestimate the speed of an approaching train and they should never go under the crossing gates
In February, a man was struck and killed by an Amtrak train at the San Lorenzo border, about five blocks from the site of Thursday's accident.
