French Alpine snowboarder Karine Ruby, 31, has died following “a mountain accident,”
Karine Ruby, 31, won the giant slalom gold medal in the 1998 Olympics in Nagano. Karine Ruby also had six snowboard world champion titles to her name.French Prime Minister Francois Fillon called Karine Ruby an "exceptional sportswoman."
Karine Ruby and two other “mountaineers” were roped together when they fell into a very deep crevasse while climbing in France’s Mont Blanc Range. One, a 38 year old, also died the other was “seriously injured.”
Karine Ruby had an illustrious career in professional snowboarding. A giant slalom, slalom and snowboardcross specialist, she earned 122 World Cup podium results, including 67 victories, in addition to a gold medal in PGS at the 1998 Winter Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan as well as a silver in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. Karine Ruby earned a total of six World Championships medals. Karine Ruby retired from competitive snowboarding following the 2006 Winter Olympic Games in Turin, Italy, where Karine Ruby was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the snowboardcross event.Ruby had since been training to become a mountain guide. Karine Ruby was expected to wrap up her training in the coming weeks.
