For the Memorial Flag Day holiday, I offer a little refresher on how to fly the flag properly. The rules are spelled out in the U.S. Flag Code, and you can learn more from the Betsy Ross home page.

On Memorial Flag Day, you're supposed to fly the flag at half-staff until noon. To do that properly, raise the flag swiftly all the way up to the top of the flag pole, then lower it slowly to the halfway point. After noon, return the flag to the top of the pole.

You may fly the flag in the rain if it is made of all-weather material.

You should not fly the flag after dark unless there is a light shining on it.

If you hang a flag horizontally from the front of your home, the stars should be at the top, left, as you view the flag from the street.

Do you fly the flag at home on Memorial Day or other days?
